I have both a Sigma 105mm Macro and a Canon 50mm Macro. I like the Sigma better. I have taken many photos with each. Lady uses the 105 for some of her outside pro shots. I bought my Sigma from http://www.adorama.com/ and it was a used lens in good shape.

Before you purchase, you might do a test drive on this one:
http://www.adorama.com/CA10028AFN.html?searchinfo=canon%20macro&item_no=1
I am not all that familiar with Canon as I am a Nikon guy, but remember you bought Canon as much for its lens technology as for their bodies so you may find that this connects superior with the matrix metering? That said, one disadvantage is that no where in the Adorama ad did I see mention of this lens being dedicated to Digital format. So the Sigma may still out gun it in Digital.
Here was a decent comment as well as critique of its focusing:
By nmcoyoteguy from Albuquerque, NM on 7/27/2007
Pros:Sharp Focus, Strong Construction, Lightweight, Consistent Output
Cons:No lens case, Can be hard to focus
Best Uses:Macro, Special Effects, Portraits
Describe Yourself:Professional
Bottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
This is an excellent macro lens. Optically, the lens parallels that to of an L-series lens. A nice feature with this lens is the ability to take other photographs other than just macro. Some macro lens will only allow for only macro use. I have been using this lens for a while now, and I continue to get consistent results. Focusing the lens may seem slower than what you maybe use to, but with some use focusing will be second nature. I was disappointed that the lens did not come packaged with a lens case – no big deal, be sure and order a case if needed. And! Remember your depth-of-field, as you get closer to your subject, you will start compressing your depth-of-field.

Prime lens are the best for sharp images. Anytime you use it for macro I do recommend manual focus. But that is going to be with any macro lens. You will not go wrong with the Canon 100mm Macro either. I hear praises about both it is just one is cheaper. Hope this helps. Any yes I would buy the Sigma lens again.

CG, thanks for posting the pics. VS is quite a better authority on macro than I currently am. He makes good sense to in recommending the extenders.
Here is a link I have relied on for years to get good advice on pro gear.
http://www.fredmiranda.com
Your macro work with the white flower shows the potential "etheral" lighting so many macro shooters miss. Go get more of that translusence. (See more in the Monthly Photo contest at the above link.)
Your Landscape work deserves the same attetion-to-details as your wondeful macro work. That refelective lake shot, wow, I have never had the opportunity to get one like that and I'm 57 !(probably never will)
Have you considered a ring flash? They are great for macro stuff, and to fill in your low light situations. With an exteded plug on it and a mini pod, you can create your own etheral lighting!
I did some macro work last year on an Orange Dragonfly. If I figure out how to post on this link, I will. Verbose enough for now. fate

LENS post #2
Hi CG, had some more time this AM. That is quite a lens you are considering, very diffficult to find any negatives about it.
"The full-frame test results for the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens are pretty much as you'd expect from a high-quality prime lens. Maximum chromatic aberration is about the same as on an APS-C sensor camera, but the average level is slightly higher, indicating that proportionately more of the frame is showing some (minimal)) distortion. As you might expect, light falloff (vignetting) is a bit h igher at about 0.4 stop wide open, quickly decreasing to 0.1 stop or less at apertures of f/5.6 or smaller. Geometric distortion is likewise just slightly higher than on a sub-frame body." [b]http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/221/cat/30
I do not find this a problem unless you simply must use full frame.
Some shots with the lens can be seen here:
http://www.motleypixel.com/reviews/index.htm?openfolder=Sigma%20Primes/Sigma%20105mm%20f2.8%20EX%20DG%20Macro/
The 6th shot here shows great depth-of-field, even with a light background. Notice the dragonfly's right wing tips are at the foreground (near point) of focus and the tail extends well into the background (far point). Had the photographer planned that range, I cannot know, (or was it even detecable in the preview?) I suspect, had he stopped down even one third of one stop, the entire bug (forgive the pun) could have been a Crisper Critter. Which finally gets me to the main point I want you to consider: Buying this lens provides you with better macro shots, but will it give you the infamous "Lens POP" or "Crazy Focus" like the L series Canon lens are now providing? Gotta go, hope this helps. fate

Hi CG, This forum just deleted my reply when I went to preview it. I guess I took too long to compose it as it asked me to log in again. I'm very upset I have wasted 1.5 hours detailing correspondence. Before it dumps me again watch the video at http://www.dtate1/video/dfly.html. I gotta go cool down. fate
