So I will maybe get it when there is no other option or it comes down A LOT in price. |
Agreed 100%. I was still running Win 98 a good while after XP came out. Windows ME was like getting some cheap candy on Halloween, it looked good, but when you tasted it...it left a BAD taste in your mouth.

right... if you are on a non-vista compliant computer. |
"Most of the problems have been found in popular first-person shooter games such as CounterStrike, Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and F.E.A.R.
Games, especially first-person shooters, tend to strain a PC’s graphics capabilities much more than business or even multimedia applications.
Besides the occasional crash, the most common reports appear to be games whose animation speed, measured in frames per second, suffers under Vista.
Experts blame still-flaky software drivers, Vista’s complexity and a dearth of new video cards optimized for Vista’s new rendering technology, DirectX 10."

well, i do get crashes. starting up media can cause hard-crashes. sometimes i crash to desktop when the server switches maps. but even with the immature drivers, the game is liquid smooth in even the most intensive situations.

I've been running ultimate for a month or so, as a test no crashes, or problems.
A few programs I used to use occasionally don't work; coffee cup flash video maker, zone alarm but I don't miss them.
Vista is very intuitive, and smooth, and clean.
Two thumbs up.

I'll consider getting it sometime after they come out with SP2... I learned with Win95 that Bill Gates enjoys using the public as beta testers...

definitely better now... the drivers are all out, and the updates are automagic.
after running XP on the old pc for the last month, I am glad to be back on the new OS... it just runs everything better.... except Ventrillo.

I have been looking for a new OS for my new system I am building presently. After reading this thread, I think that I will be going with the windows xp pro 64bit. I don't seem to hear much "good news" about vista yet. I may wait for the change a couple years, or like Ren says, when I have to.

I got a copy of Vista for free from a promotion that Microsoft did. I ran it from January 1st, 2007 to sometime in June 2007. I just couldn't stomach it any more. IMO that OS is a joke. On the mini-me site the developers were posting that it was put out at least 12 months too early. From using the BETA versions of Longhorn to what eventually became Vista, I whole heartedly agree with it.
DX10 is just a marketing ploy and nothing else. It was artificially tied to the OS so people would have to upgrade. It's not working out like MS had hoped it would. They just recently released service pack 2C for XP because of the people switching from Vista back to XP. SP2C exists for the sole reason to allow more CD keys (which they were running out of). OEMs were flooded with requests by customers to exchange Vista for XP.
The issues with Vista losing performance is mainly because of the way the OS handles DX. Vista was supposed to release the DWM (desktop manager) from memory when a full screen app or game wanted exclusive DX control. That feature was cut from Vista and as a result your app/game is fighting with the DWM for control. Another issue is because of the DRM that's built in to the system. It polls the system at a high frequency to make sure you're not trying to copy (steal) HD protected audio and video output. While it would seem like a non-issue because most people do not play HD-DVD or BluRay disc on their PCs, it does interfere with everything related to audio and video and performance as a whole.
Yes, I know an OS will not be perfect when it's first released, but the sheer amount of bugs and oversights in Vista is overwhelming to say the least. There was recently a patch released that fixed an out of memory error while copying files. That very bug was the main reason that I dumped Vista and went back to XP64. I have 8 gigs of ram and ran out while copying a meager 50 megs worth of files from one partition to another.
As for the post above about "non Vista compliant" computers. I've had several friends and family members buy Vista ready machines and couldn't get them to work for crap. Of all the good stories about Vista that people write, there are magnitudes more about the bad.
I'm glad that I got my copy of Vista for free because if I had paid for it, I would have been one sh!tty person.

At that time Windows 7 should be released. That's the one I'm waiting for. Vista will never touch any system of mine again. Do a google search for Minwin. There are articles and videos that talks about the things that are being done for 7.

Been a very long time bro!!! You caught me within minutes of ordering vista through newegg. The problem I have now is... are the things I bought compliant to vista going to work on XP Pro 64-bit? Scary situation I have here. I have like an OS and video card left to go, that leaves everything else I have already purchased. Mobo is vista certified, everything I got.
