You want parents to take some responsibility for their childrens' education??? Are you nuts??? Alot of parents are already responsible for cashing their welfare checks, wisely spending their food stamps, paying the $10 a month rent for their subsidized house or apartment, picking up their weekly unemployment check, and signing the right forms to get free utilities... Just how much more responsibility do you think we need to lay on these poor people??? Just because you and I, along with many others, choose to work for a living, pay our taxes and bills, and raise our kids, doesn't mean that everyone should have to... I mean damn, what would this world be like if everyone took responsibility for themselves and their kids??? What would we do with all the lawyers and democrats???

Just my opinion... Smile

Check it out HTR. This letter earned me runner-up status for Correspondent of the Year in 1997. Your post reminded me of it.

The brackets show the original wording as I typed it. Sometimes the newspaper edits for brevity and some of my thoughts may be taken out for space constraints.

That's the biggest reason I'm running for office (starting with the Board of Supervisors for my County). I am so sick of disingenuous, lying, spineless wimps, who say one thing to one group and something different to another group. Like me or hate me, people will not wonder where I stand on an issue. All they have to do is ask me (sometimes they don't even have to ask).

Welfare may need to be completely overhauled or scrapped and rethought. From my own experience, I have seen a vast majority of those on it as very lazy, dishonest, and unmotivated. Very few have I seen that were really in need. If we are forced to keep it, it would be nice to see it centered on healthy food only.

Just my own experience, not neccessarily a fact everywhere or in all cases.

Good article... Altho my favorite is still getting in line at Wal-Mart behind some losers with 8 kids that have no clue how to behave in public, 1 shopping cart 1/2 full of groceries, and 3 carts full of clothes, electronics, and everything else imaginable... Then they leave in their $5,000 car with the $10,000 rims and the $25,000 stereo rattling the windows...

Here's a new idea for welfare: Scrap the whole system... Then start over with the one that was in place when this country was founded: the "work" program... If you want to eat, have a place to live, etc., then get a job... If you are truly unable to work, there are institutions available... And as has been the case for thousands of years, begging is always an option...

The biggest argument for illegal immigration is that these people fill in the jobs that Americans don't want... How about we fill those jobs with the unemployed first??? Like I tell my daughter, "Life is NOT about what you want, it's about what you have to do"... Take all of those on welfare and give those unwanted jobs to them... Let them earn their way through life just like the rest of us...

And I reckon I have to agree with Studdog on this one: CYNIC FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Oh, I could tell some stories about the people who paid for their groceries with food stamps and then went out and got in their $35,000 customized van, or their new Beemer.

I loved the fact that one day I was able to actually witness and catch a guy trying to sell his food stamps for cash. Most people would do this somewhere outside of the store, but this nimrod was walking up and down the meat case in my store asking women if they wanted to buy his $65 book of stamps for $40. I saw and heard him make the offer. Being a Special Police Officer in the city I had arrest powers, so I approached him and arrested him. I pointed to the back, inside flap of the book to the part where it said selling food stamps was a Federal crime. I mirandized him and interviewed him for my report.

He admitted that they were his stamps and he was trying get money to put gas in his car. When I called the Dept. of Agriculture (they are the bureau that handles F.S.) the guy I spoke with was literally astounded that I actually made such an arrest. I told him when the court date was set for and he assured me he would be there, as he had never heard of anything like this being taken to court before (sad ain't it?).

Due to my testimony, and the culprit having made the statement after he was mirandized, he was convicted and had his F.S. privileges revoked. The guy from the Dept. of Ag. was beside himself and couldn't stop talking about how he couldn't wait to tell everyone in his office what had happened. Is there any doubt that there is much fraud and waste in our Federal budget that could be gotten rid of?

I could regale you with numerous such stories about the abuses I witnessed and how I used to deal with them. But that is for another time and post.

A state wide pre-k program? hahahahahaha, like thats going to happen.

I have a 4.0 GPA (entering junior year in high school), in the top 30 of my class (380 man/woman class), and I never went to preschool.

You DON'T need to go to preschool to have an academically successful educational life; I've seen this first hand.

I also read somewhere that separating a child from his/her mother before the age of 5 can potentially psychologically "damage" the child.

Good points all, Commando, but you're overlooking one important component. If the child is seperated from his/her parents and placed in the care of the State at an early age, he/she is much easier to indoctrinate. The fact is that Pre-K programs are nothing more than government subsidized daycare. If they actually called it daycare the electorate would be up-in-arms about such an expenditure of their tax dollars. But, call it a Pre-K Educational program and voila, problem solved.

If parents wish for their children to be in daycare, and they pay for it themselves, that is fine. But, to use my tax dollars, which already pays for their elementary, and secondary education, is going beyond the pale. The problem is that there are far too many of our fellow "citizens" who would enjoy having us pay for their child's daycare. Thus, those of us who "pay the bills" must stand up and make our voices heard. I certainly plan to.

Good stuff Cynic and I wish you all the best in your endeavors.

I am one that fully believes that if our founding forefathers could be brought back to witness one day in America today they would fall away in disgust and hide their faces in shame for what they visioned and set about to do is not what came to be. Not because we are a strong nation in the world, not because we have a democratic system but because the moral fabric of our nation is coming undone like a cheap suit....I know because I have a few of those.

This nation has become a place where the majority no longer have a voice as to what takes place but rather the minority do. If you doubt this one only need to look at how politically correct everyone has to be these days because one word or phrase may upset and offend another.

Muslims have been in America for decades so why do they now need special treatment in the form of "foot baths" in Universities or "prayer breaks" during the day while working? What did all those Muslims do years ago without a foot bath and a prayer break? Since public money is being used to install the foot baths can an "infidel" like myself use that bath to cool my feet off when I like or would that be frowned upon? The minority telling the majority how it's going to be.

Best wishes to you Cynic Smile

I don't even want to get started on the school system....bit I will. My boys are in 8th grade. They were told we had to purchase the book for the class on CD, unless we didn't have a computer. They said they don't have enough books to go around. Evil or Very Mad Ok if you don't have enough BOOKS then just give us the CD, why make us pay for it. Bet it cost less to make the CD than the book.
They also have middle school basketball games during school hours and then make the kids pay to get into the game! Evil or Very Mad If you can't afford it you sit in a study hall! WTF, this seems like financial segregation!

If my wife and I didn't have to both work to make ends meet then I would either home school, or send to a private school!
