k..
running vista with asus mobo and soundcard. getting the directsound message. I can get vent to pick up my mic OLNY if I use hotkey. why can't I get it to pick up passively w/o hotkey????

Go to set-up in Ventrilo.
On the first page/voice tab:
Check the"Enable outgoing voice communications"
Make sure the "Use Push-To-Talk Hotkey" is not checked.
Make sure "Sensitivity" is not too high.
These may be settings you are already aware of and have checked, but that's the only ideas I could come up with.

Maybe it is my microphone, but the sensitivity that I have now is only 4.

We have four PC's. ( I don't look forward to buying three more copies of TF2 and CoD4. Wish they came in family packs!  )
The sensitivity goes from 30 to 95 on them.
I think it depends a lot on the complete set-up and the individuals voice.
I made a post of how I set my Ventrilo up.

I don't claim that it is the best way, but it has worked very well for me on four different PC's.

hmm. the ONLY way i got it to pick up was by setting sensitivity to "1"
that's weird, because windows easily picked up my mic.
