what makes the 8600 bad all the review are saying its good stuff and for the price

depends what card your looking at.
and its $100 more.
8800GT is THE best card for the money ATM.
8600 can barley run any of the dx10 games, and has similar clock speed to top 7 series cards. 8800GT on the other hand is about $200 cheaper then GTX and Ultra and clocks in close to the GTX. Its in your best intrest to not buy mid ranged stuff now, since as better and better games come out you want to get decent FPS, and not complain about getting 30 fps(like you do now)

I beg to differ..
I am running an EVGA 8600GTS I picked up for under $200 and love it. It's light weight and puts no strain on the mobo like my old 6800GT did. I can run cod4 at amazing settings without a single stutter. UT3 seems to run just fine with it...

I second the suggestion that Exodus gave.
A better video card is worth the money.
We are gamers, so why hold back on one of our most important parts?
You won't be let down with a 8800GT, so try your best to get one.

If you need to save some cash I've heard the 512MB model of the ATI(AMD) 3850 does extremely well. It's not as fast as the 8800GT, but is still almost twice as fast as the 8600. You'll find the 8800GT running for $270 or more, you can find the 3850 512MB for $200. I as well would recommend the 8800, but I understand the cash thing. Just providing another option.
Also, do you need a keyboard, mouse and monitor, or will you be reusing stuff. Do you need a new case, optical drive, etc. The more you can reuse, the better the components you can get.

| Call of Duty 4 and UT3 are not really intensive games, an 8600GT should do fine. But for newer games it just cripples. Depends on what you want to play on it and at what sort of quality.

True COD4 and UT3 are not as intensive as say Crysis, but even with lowered quality setting the highest resolution with decent framerates will be 1280 x 1024 and will still sometimes dip down below 30fps. I would know because I have an 8600GT, I have 21" CRT (HUUUUUGE) so the image quality isn't bad because CRT's adjust fairly well with resolution changes. An 19" LCD with a native resolution of 1440 x 900 will have a fairly decent image quality loss going down to that resolution. Example: I have a 17" LCD at work native 1280x1024, and if I change the resolution to 1024x768, it's very noticeably "fuzzier", especially with text.
If I were you I would lower my processor to the 4400 or there abouts to give more money to the GPU. I have the 3800+ X2 (which can be found for <$55 minus fan & heatsink) and have been happy with it. Unless you're planning on doing some major CPU intensive apps like DVD encoding and major "photochopping" or video editing, you won't need a CPU like the 6000+. I also wouldn't go cheap on the PSU cause it could spell trouble later on. I'll run through some configurations and see what I come up with. Let me us know what other things you will be doing with this computer besides gaming, I'm assuming gaming is primary and the most intensive applications you'll be using.

i told him not to buy the 8600, because new games are gona run like crap on the 8600. 8600 is not a good card...my 7950 out preforms it, except for the fact its dx10...but GL running a dx10 game with an 8600.
