Boxing Day.....Another Canadian Holiday... |
|
|
I was asked what Boxing Day is....
Boxing Day is a public holiday celebrated in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and many other Commonwealth countries on December 26, the day after Christmas Day;[1][2] or alternatively on the next weekday after Christmas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day
Canada
In Canada, Boxing Day is observed as a holiday, except (in some cases) for those in the retail business. Boxing Day and the days immediately following are when many retail stores sell their Christmas and retired model products by holding clearance sales. Some shoppers will line up for hours at night (sometimes before midnight and after midnight on December 26) for retailers to open their doors. ......Individual big box stores can even gross over CAD$1,000,000 on one single Boxing Day.
Sooooo it is a good time to go shopping if you want to fight the crowds....(if you think shopping in the malls a couple days before christmas is bad...) But then I would rather sleep in....

How soon they forget. Some of you may remember when I tried to explain the history behind Boxing Day last year. For those who have forgotten, or never knew, here it is again;
Boxing Day is an old Canadian tradition, eh? It started many years ago when there was an influx of Newfoundland natives (Newfies) into the eastern Canadian Provinces. From there the Newfies continued moving west until they occupied much of Canada. True Canadians, fearing for their pure bloodlines, decided that something needed to be done. As Newfies were not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier, it was easy to convince them that they must participate in an old Canadian Tradition during the holidays, or else they would not be REAL Canadians.
The Newfies were convinced that ALL Canadians, at this time of year, climbed into a large box and had it sealed so that they may surprise their family members when they opened it later that same day. The Newfies were told that this tradition came from the original Inuit tribes of Northern Canada and began as a simple attempt to remain warm during those long, cold winters in the Great White North. The Newfies, wanting to fit in and become REAL Canadians, gladly went along with the tradition. What the Canadians didn't tell them was that upon sealing the box it was immediately festooned with address and postage BACK TO NEWFOUNDLAND!! The boxes, with their unwitting occupants were then sent back from whence they came, thus preserving Canadian bloodlines for another generation.
Thus we come to celebrate BOXING DAY in Canada!
Its all true.................I SWEAR!
