Yes, you can plug it in to a free port on the MB within the case, as long as you have an extra power connection, I'm guessing you should. If you want to plug it in the port on top, you'll need some external power for it as an SATA connection by itself doesn't supply power.

You most likely wont be able to boot from that harddrive as it is a good idea to format a drive when changing systems or CPU generations.

What I did with mine is hook it up as a slave and you must bypass administration controls or basically take ownership of the harddrive. Then you will be able to access your files to duplicate them. In order to bypass the administrator you must login to your newly formatted harddrive in safe mode. Then right click on the folder(s) you want and go to properties. Click the security tab. Then advanced. Then the owner tab. Then on the name list click and highlight yourself being the administrator. Then click ok or yes and that should take ownership of those files. Usually the stuff you need is in "your documents". Remember you must be in safe mode to achieve this.

Great thing for boot cd's and portable booting devices to do a hit and run on a locked harddrive lol... just kidding Wink

You're confused because you're trying to use an external connection with an internal device.

External SATA drives come with the power adapter.
