Finally got my TV! |
|
|
After a year or so of saving every last nickel and dime, I finally got an HDTV. I purchased a Toshiba REGZA 42" 1080p LCD television.
http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-REGZA-42HL167-1080p-HDTV/dp/B000MXYD0I
It's normally $1800, but I found it at Bestbuy for $1300 yesterday. I'm absolutely blown away by the picture. I've downloaded a few hi-def trailers on Xbox Live and played Call of Duty 4, and the picture is just stunning.
I've also been curious about the possibility of connecting my PC to the TV. Would it be possible to use my computer as a way to send a Hi-def signal to my TV to watch movies instead of purchasing a blu-ray/HD DVD player? I have an 8800GT and an AMD Dual Core clocked at 2.4 GHz just for a specs reference. If this is possible, how would I go about doing this? I've read very briefly about the HDMI ports (TV has these), but I don't have a firm grasp on the capabilities.
Any articles or user experiences would be great!

I got that Sony Bravia 40" 1080 LCD for my room, got it on boxing day for on sale for like $850 from $1600.
But that tv you got is pretty good, my friend Cohen has one.
My friend used to have his Computer hooked up to his tv. I can ask him what he did.

Just run a DVI to HDMI cable right from your 8800gt's secondary DVI port. You can get up to 16ft cables for like 10 bucks on Newegg. It's what I do, and I know it's considered "lame" by some, but 35 bucks for one movie is rediculous so I just torrent the bluray rips until they find their way to around 15 bucks a disk, probably in a year or so. An HD signal is useless to your HDTV if you don't have High Definition content to view on it.
Oh, by the way in case you didn't see around the internet, HD-DVD is over, so if you were to go ahead and purchase an HD player, make sure you get the Bluray.

have you set up your 360 as a media extender yet? it's pretty easy to do, got my ps3 streaming media from all computers in the house, able to access over a terabyte of videos/music/photos already. true 1080p downloads won't be as perfect as an actual disc, but that's why netflix offering blu-ray is such a great thing. also, the only blu-ray player which will be continuously upgradeable over the life cycle of the product is PS3...all other blu-ray players will be fine for watching movies, but no enhanced features will be available for later releases.

Thanks for the info intense.
I HAD my 360 set up as a media player through my router, but it stopped working after an update and I've been through everything imaginable to try to get it to work again. I've pretty much given up.
I'm looking into getting a blu-ray player later on when I'm a little more stable financially. Netflix looks like a good option as far as renting movies. Does it cost the same amount per month to get Blu-ray movies as it does standard definition?
