I left out Irfanview... very cool program that allows browsing much like ACDsee, and also has one of the best built in resize/resampling functions... plus its free!

AnyDVD is a driver that runs in the background that decrypts your own dvd's so they are able to be backed up in case of fire or flood Cool

I like it because it is updated regularly to get 99.9% of every DVD out there including Blu-Ray movies if you purchase AnyDVD-HD.

Just open the program in your tray, and let it do its own thing once you stick a dvd in your drive. Then you are able to use it to burn, or open your other backup program such as DVD Shrink to make a copy of your movie and customize it to skip menus and/or previews.

DVD Shrink is a Free program to copy/backup DVD5's (~4.7GB), and DVD9's (7.5GB), and make them fit on a single layer DVD. Has customizing to remove adverts, trailers, extras etc... and focus the quality manually on the movie, thus extracting more frames etc from other unimportant areas of the full dvd. I use this coupled with AnyDVD to create .VOB files to burn later with Nero Burning ROM Lite Edition. It also creates ISO Image files.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

It is unsupported, but still works just fine and will for a very long time. Others I have used like it include the non-free Intervideo DVD5 Copy. Or now known as Corel DVD Copy 6...

QuickSFV is a file verification tool that integrates into your shell. It verifies that all downloaded files are not corrupted. If you have ever seen an SFV file, now you know what it does.

Fast AVI MPEG Joiner is a very quick and easy way to join split AVI or MPEG files. If you have ever downloaded a movie and it is split into 2 cd's, you can join them in preparation to convert to DVD or just have 1 simple watchable video file.

WinAVI Video Converter is a great tool to convert your media files to DVD, XViD, MPEG etc.... It's much like ConvertX2DVD in many ways, and supports almost all known popular formats.

Flashget is a very popular Download Manager that makes quick downloads of internet files. I have used this for years and love it. I still use the classic version, as I don't need the other options in their latest.

Peerguardian2 is an IP filter or blocking tool that runs in your tray using little to no resources. I use this tool to block dangerous IP's when downloading using torrents, which is the only P2P method I will use other than direct downloading via http and ftp.

Nice program and I used it for a long time before ConvertXtoDVD, but it should be noted for those running Vista that it won't work in Vista.

I thought I'd post a few utilities I use, typically when I do a fresh install of Windows.

http://www.grc.com is a great place to test your ports and firewall security, but as well they have 3 particular utilities I like to use.

"Windows" messenger, not "msn" messenger, has some large security issues with it usually all the time. So I use their tool to disable it.

http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

It used to work great, but now after messenger opens itself after an install, you still have to do a manual shutoff in the preferences.

DCOMbobulator - Helps fend off worms and other harmful net junk.

http://www.grc.com/freeware/dcom.htm

Unplug 'n' pray - Disables Windows universal plug and play support

http://www.grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm

Also with newer generations of PC's being used, its good to see what features you have, and might not know you have.

http://www.grc.com/securable.htm

And after all is done, test your firewall with sheilds up.
