Of course I googled this to see what it was, having never come across it before, does anyone know what triggers this to pop up?

Just popped up yesterday

I think in Vista Ultimate, it is timed as part of Vistas numerous pop-ups to remind you of all its features. As far as i know, Ultimate is the only Vista that offers Encrypted back ups.

After selecting an option, it may pop up again at a later date... I just don't know what the timing is, or how to shut it off. If thats what you want.

I would back it up.. its a built in safety measure. Its only the key that it's asking about.

Nothing to do with "backups"...

Encryption (BitLocker) is included in the business oriented "ultimate" editions as a way for a company to encrypt critical data/folders/drives on a pc, so someone stealing the hard drive or the pc or hacking into the computer won't be able to read the data without the key. Not sure what event / timeframe causes it to offer to backup your encryption key for you, (a lot of companies want you to backup the key to a USB that is given to Corporate Security) but I just turn off the entire encryption feature, as I certainly don't need it for my home pc.

Back-up of the encryption key....

If you use the encryption feature, its recommended to segregate the key from the system itself by placing it on a disk or some sort. Its Windows way of saying "It's not our fault if you lose access to your encrypted data."

I however still prefer 3rd party encryption applications like TruCrypt etc... theirs tend to usually be stronger and harder to bust.

You don't have to encrypt anything for encryption support to be running. I think it's a windows service that you can turn off.

that's funny SD..

there is no file encryption service in VU, bitlocker may have something to do with it, but that has never been enabled.

the only thing I actually remember doing that may have triggered it, is attaching a spreadsheet and a pile of scanned receipts to a quicken account item.

regardless thank you all the same I backed up the key thingies and posted them on ebay
