I'm the first to complain about politics and the direction the US has been going recently, but I'm a patriot at heart and I'm very devoted to upholding our traditions. For instance, do you know that at military funerals the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776? I didn't either.

That said, I'd like to pass along something about the folding of the flag. I'm sure everyone has noticed how an honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but that's not correct. Here is what it means:

The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.
The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life.
The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world
The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance
The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong."
The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that They pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America , and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic.
The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.
The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born.
The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their nations motto, "In God We Trust."

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have a deep meaning. In the future, when you see a flag being folded properly, you'll know why.

Thanks for posting that Pitt. That is the sort of thing that I love about history, the little things we take for granted and wonder what their origins are.

One can only wonder now, how long will it be before someone decides to make the folding of the flag more "Politicly Correct"...

Get rid of the first fold, lest we take sides on the abortion issue...
Get rid of the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th and 13th for their religious connotations...
Get rid of the 9th fold because it singles out a minority...
Get rid of the 10th, due to it's chauvinistic nature...

That leaves 3 folds, which I'm certain some pinko commie liberal can find SOME excuse to get rid of...

I think Obama is making this one of his highest proirities as President.

Ya the nut really thinks he is gonna make it!

Anyways, his proposal for the new folding and storage of the American flag is as follows:
1, Crumble it up into a ball.
2, Use left hand to throw it in the trash.
3, Put a lid on trash can.
4, Place seals on trash can and label as toxic religious waste.

MEANINGS of Obama's new steps:
1, Symbolic of it is no longer needed and the real USA is gone.
2, Left hand represents the Liberal Democrats as the ones removing the real USA and replacing it with UCA = United Communists of America.
3, The trash lid is a symbol of the belief that the real USA might come back and needs to be covered and forgotten. Out of sight = out of mind.
4, Represents the hope that no one will read and learn that the USA is actually a Biblical Capitalism form of government that is based on Christian values and is meant to be by the people and for the people. Even though the USA is not a religious government, it just BASED on Christian principals, it must be labeled as religious and toxic so that there will be a fear to bring it back. Because everyone knows that a country based on Biblical principals would never become the greatest country on earth and exposure should be avoided like nuclear waste.

Shocked Laughing

Sorry! I couldn't resist! Twisted Evil

I submit then, that if Obama does manage to get elected, this will soon become the new official flag of the United States of America...

I hate to tell you all but this is all a wad of poop. The folding of the flag was simply a way to keep in clean and easily storable.
It does make for a nice urban legand though.

Can anyone tell me what is in the ball at the top of the flag pole on any given military installation?
