Yeh, basically the same as the airline hijackers in the 70's and 80's, just smarter... They don't have to worry about running out of fuel at 30,000 feet, or blowing a hole in the side if they need to shoot someone and miss... Not to mention the whole sitting duck thing once they land on a runway... The ocean is extremely large, and is real good for hiding something as small (relatively) as a ship, even a supertanker...

Nothing surprising, been seeing quite a bit about pirates over the past couple years, they are just getting back into the spotlight.
Pirates never died off, and its still a big game.
