OK, I reinstalled windows XP on my PC today. I did not format the disks or anything, just replaced the existing XP files with new ones.

The install went well but afterwards I could not connect to the internet.

I did not touch the modem nor the router. The wireless in the house is unaffected but my PC with the cable from the router is not seeing anything.

1394 says connected and active but no packet transfer.

Please help? Is there a step by step process to connect to the internet.

When I build this PC I did not have to do anything but plug in the cable to have internet. What did I do wrong this time by reinstalling XP?

Thanks
DB7

The problem more than likely is that you didn't do a clean install. You had Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 installed on your old system as well as all the updates since, and overlaying the installed Windows with an older XP without formatting first is almost always going to give you fits with conflicts between old system level stuff and new. You are probably going to want to back up your data (pictures, music, movies, COD5 players folder etc) and do a clean install. I know it's a hassle, but It's for the best.

You really should look at Acronis True Image Home for keeping an image of your system nightly... It will save you hours or days when you need to fix a disaster.

I've backed up all my pictures, movies, etc. last night. It took a while but it's done.

What is the simplest way to format my hard drives? I actually WANT to clear them out, believe it or not.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD and read the prompts carefully. You can remove the existing partition and create a brand spanking new one using your whole hard drive in the install process for Windows.

One issue I had and it's something I do with every format, is make sure your chipset/ethernet drivers are on a flash stick for later install. I just plain can't connect to the internet unless I load the drivers after windows setup is complete.
