My question is I am gonna buy a new computer in Feb anyway. I have the chance to buy this computer for $60 from my emplyer, they are getting rid of them for newer ones. I was gonna combine it with my current one. If it is possible. My question is would it be a waste of money or would I notice any differnece in performance by getting it. I am STILL gonna get a new one in Feb anyway. I didnt know if combining these 2 rigs would be worth the work or not. It also come with a CRT monitor too....lol Also my son was joining the military and when I bought a new one I was gonna give him this combination of whatever it is. It would be soemthin for him to start out with. All the help is appreciated and thanx

Thanks Stud. I thought it might be alittle improvement but wasn't sure. Just don't know what video card it has or if its agp or pci or what. Might have to buy video card but don't wanna if I can't take it back out and put it in the one I buy in feb. Just wantin to get somethin I can play above cod2. I have the cod 3 still in the box and never played. I know everyone else is like on cod 52....lol

I Googled the Dell. I think I would save the $60 towards your new one. It does appear just to use the onboard graphics chip. You sure you have Cod 3 as that was for Xbox :P It is actually pretty good too. Black-ops is the next Cod which should make that Cod 7. I have a feeling the new Medal of Honor is going to poop all over black-ops.

I'd buy it just to use as a print server, or add a couple of large HDDs and make it a file server... Or maybe let my daughter use it... But what can you expect from a guy with 2 desktops and a laptop on 1 floor, and 3 desktops, a laptop and an old Compaq Proliant server in my basement office... All tied in to a single network...

I suppose if it has a PCIe slot then it will be an upgrade and you should get a bit more performance by sticking your old card in it. But I really recommend Windows 7 and a DX11 card, seeing games in all there glory is incredible.

Nah, I figure it will be my wife, daughter or one of the cats holding the knife... Something about spending too much time on computers...

Well it cost me $45...lol heres what i got

http://www.wikio.com/product/dell-optip ... 95395.html

The county had someone check them and wipe them clean.

Just curious what vide card should I get for it. Of course Im gonna take the video card I put in this and put it in the 1 i get in feb. Any suggestions. Cause it would just have a stock card in it now.

Also my current rig has a 40 GB PATA hard drive and this one is a 40 GB SATA. Can I plug the old one in anyway and use it or do I just need to reinstall all my programs on the new one.

All the help is appreciated HHHHHEEEELLLLPPPPP!!!!

Will I even notice a diff in cod2 game play...lol

It appears to have a PCIE slot so stick your old card in it first and give it a go. What are you planning on getting in February ? If you are going with Windows 7, I would wait and get one of the latest cards in February as the prices should have dropped a lot. Have a look around and maybe get a second hand 8800Gt or similar for now.

My current card in my computer is a agp card so I need to buy one for this one so I'm wondering what would be a good card to get now that would prolly be ok in feb or i may have to buy one in feb 2...lol The computer i get in feb isnt gonna be nything wild just something alot more up to date and quad core or i5 since all my comp are single core and old...lol

ALSO im gonna take the 512mb and 256 mb ram i have in the old one an put it in this one it said it had 4 slots and 2 have 256mb in it. If they are the same. I may have to take the power supply and swap out to. Sounds like its alot of work but when I get a diff 1 ill just pass it to one of the kids... (23 , 20 year olds)....lol

Swapping your hard drives will not let you bypass reinstalling windows and all the correct drivers etc...
You can put both hard drives in if you want, since the OptiPlex GX280 has two SATA connectors.
Personally I like having more than one drive.
I put all my personal stuff on the secondary drive.
Then if I ever need to reinstall windows, I just erase the primary drive and reinstall and all my personal stuff is still on the secondary drive.

As for the video card, I would say buy whatever you can at the most you are willing to spend.
I do have one concern; I'm not sure if PCI Express x 16 version 2.0 or 2.1 are backwards combatable with PCI Express x 16 version 1.
If they are, then you are okay.
If they are not combatable, then you will need to know which one the motherboard has.
My guess is they are backwards combatable, but don't rely on my guess.

You should see some improvement over your current system, but your biggest improvement will come when you really do the major upgrade in February.
