Recommendation: Just move to Windows 7 and be done with it...

In order to install Windows Vista SP2, you'll need to have Service Pack 1 installed. Microsoft indicates that it might take an hour or more to install the update,and after you're done some hardware (like your sound card) might not work until you install updated drivers.

You missed one! m09;

I can't imagine why it would have anything to do with your sound drivers, unless you are running with really old ones. Still, that is a scary caveat... I installed the beta of Service Pack 2 way back before Windows 7 came out, and I didn't have any issues, but as with any major update, back up important data first...

Did I mention that your best bet is to move to Windows 7 and be done with it?

My laptop just asked to update. I am doomed if it takes my sound drivers out of that. I am letting it auto update as the download from MS contains a lot of crap and is 1.3 GB. The laptop only wants 300MB.

I'm not sure that update is the Service Pack. I had read that it won't start auto-deploying until sometime in June, although you can download it and install it now.

You will also have to get another copy of K Lite and media player classic after installing this. That is if you use that.
