Im a lil nervous about downloading this...I recently bought a game off steam that said I needed this to play it...I did download it and it killed my hardrive...I just got my new hardrive and dont know if I should install it again for fear of killing a brand new hardrive any idea why that happened?

A download will not wreck a hard drive. We are on service pack 2 for vista now. Install Vista then let auto updates do the rest for you.

Agreed. Nothing that a Windows update or service pack install can do will ever physically harm a hard drive. It doesn't work that way.

To add to that. Let vista do its thing before you start adding graphic and sound card drivers. Service pack 2 likes to remove your sound driver for some reason.
