What a terrible loss! |
|
|
Here are my two Hard Maple trees a couple years prior to the storm.
I really liked these trees, I thought they were awesome.
They were two of the tallest trees in this area.
Then on May 30th 2008 a severe storm came thru and destroyed them.
One fell into the other while I was watching out the window.
They fell across the street and took out my neighbor’s apple tree, cherry tree, and oak tree.
Luckily the trees fell in a Y shape and missed their house.
The past four years have had terrible storms for my trees.
I have lost ten trees in the past few years.
In 2006 I lost a very huge Red Oak tree.
The Oak tree fell on my house, garage, and shed.
The Oak did almost $50,000 worth of damage.
Now I also have to remove two huge Black Walnut trees.
They are at the bottom of a hill behind my garage.
We are bringing in forty quad axle loads of dirt to taper the hills to make them easier to mow.
I had DNR check them out and they said the fill around the trees would kill them.
I will then be left with only one big Black Walnut tree and that will be our only tree unless a storm takes it out.
Not really the worst problem to have in life, but it still breaks my heart.
There’s know way to replace these in my life time.
I think I need to move out of the small town and into the country.
A larger lot with many older trees sure sounds good.

Move out to the country, get a large lot with lots of old trees. You only get one life, live where it does you good.

I know how you feel, Studdog. We had a huge pine tree fall right between our house and our neighbors a couple of years ago. Had it fallen a few inches in either direction there would have been severe damage to one of our homes.
Perhaps it is time for you to branch out and leaf the small town behind. You can always put down roots somewhere else. Of course, being a dog and all, I hope you don't wind up barking up the wrong tree.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Stud,
As for the black walnut tree, I have seen people build ring walls round the base of the tree from brick or block. The walls where built only about 3 feet in diameter ( 1 to 1 1/2 feet per side) large than tree trunk. Back fill the outside of the ring to match the slope you want, leaving the inside at the original surface. It should work being that black walnut tree have a large tap root.

I agree Fate.
Very funny Cynic.
Thanks for the idea Pow, but it’s too late.
Here’s my Black Beauties before two of them went down.
It will be interesting to see how the last one fills out now that it has the area to its self.
View from back yard.
View from the driveway.

Sry about the trees stud. I have a tree in my front yard that myself and my boys planted when they were little and if something happened to it i would be crushed. The way the weather has been this year I've just been praying nothing happens to the trees in my yard. When we bought our house, back in the stone ages, we had no trees. Now we have 3. My sympathy for you trees. Thankfully nobody was hurt
