You will generally not get a full driver like that on a laptop Have you installed one before? Normally laptop graphics drivers are chopped down versions by the maker.

This is odd,.....

FATAL ERROR..... You are running a 32 bit version of Nvidia uninstaller on a 64 bit system (binary type I386). Wrong version of uninstaller. Uninstaller exits now.

How and why did this happen when I downloaded the proper drivers for my 8800 gt in the past? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Nope just got the laptop yesterday. Should I look for another update?

EDIT: Yeah the 8600M is not supported on the website.

****

Try manually uninstalling the driver by using the following procedure:

1. Control Panel=>Windows Update=>Change Settings=>"Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".
2. Download the latest driver from the nvidia website. http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
3. Go to Device Manager, select your display adaptor, and uninstall it, choose to also delete drivers when prompted.
4. Reboot computer into safe mode by pressing f8 when the computer boots, when prompted to install new display driver choose "never install a driver for this device"
5. Navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\ and rename the file nvlddmkm.sys to nvlddmkm_old.sys. Take note of the date of this file
6. Navigate to c:\windows\system32 and rename any other file of the same date as nvlddmkm.sys which begins with the letters 'nv'
**ADDED FOR CLARITY***
For examples:
nvcplui.exe become nvcplui_old.exe
nvd3dumx.dll becomes nvd3dumx_old.exe
etc..etc..etc..Repeat for all files with the same date as the file you found in step 5, they begin with the letters 'nv'
If it is too tedious to rename all the files, you can simply delete them, or move them to a different folder.
*********************
6a. For 64bit Vista, repeat step 6 in c:\windows\sysWOW64
7. Reboot to normal Windows, if prompted again to install a driver choose "never install a driver for this device.
8. Install the driver which you downloaded from the nvidia website.

I am quite sure this is caused by the fact that installing new video drivers seems to be one of the trickier and more problematic things you can do on a PC (maybe flashing the BIOS is more hassle, but barely).

Not pointing fingers since I have no idea how you uninstalled / reinstalled nVidia drivers in the past, but in general:

**** Installing New Video Drivers ****

* Download new drivers to desk top. (Do not install yet)
* Download Driver Cleaner Pro. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Driver_Cle...nal_d3214.html
* OR Download Guru Driver Sweeper http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655
* UnInstall old drivers - Rt click desktop - Properties / settings / advanced / adaptor / properties / driver.
* Unplug internet.
* Reboot
* Cancel out of auto install programs that will pop up.
* Run Driver Cleaner Pro or Guru Driver Sweeper for your driver set.
* Reboot
* Cancel out of auto install programs that will pop up.
* Install new drivers.
* Plug in internet
* Reboot

I guess I am one of the lucky ones who has never had a problem. Using the nForce4 Ultra chipset as well still... I just do the normal control panel uninstall of "only display" drivers. Reboot, then run the new exe driver, install, and reboot again. Been doing it this way since my first PC. I use an EVGA card, and always use the driver they recommend at their site no matter if it is WHQL or Beta.

Which is good, but there is a reason why Driver Cleaner Pro is one of the more popular utilities available on Download.com... Wink

My point being.. I think a lot of people install new drivers right over the top of their old ones... or fail to uninstall any drivers before installing the new. Also not getting the latest DirectX Runtime can cause some issues as well with compatibility.
