So I recently got my new laptop, and I need to transfer around 40-50gb of music and another 5gbs of misc stuff.

What's the fastest and cheapest way to transfer the data without using a network or the internet. My internet is only 1.5mb/s, so I rather not rely on the network. I heard that you can transfer the data using just a CAT 5 ethernet cable without using the network or internet. Is that possible?

So do I just connect the two computers with the ethernet cable? And I guess do a search of the computer?

So are those usb easy transfer cables just a waste of money?

You can do it either way... There are 2 kinds of ethernet cables, so if you go that route, make sure you get a "Crossover" one... These are usually cheaper than the USB transfer cables... Another option is that if you have a network set up in your home, to just use it, although this slows things down since you then have a switch or router acting as a middle man with the data...

My personal favorite is to just connect the old hard drive directly into the new computer as a slave, and do a straight copy of the files from 1 disk to the other... This is much faster than using ethernet or USB, but not very practical if your'e going from a desktop to a laptop, although it can be done...

And regardless of the method, 45-55 GB of data is going to take some time, so don't be in too big of a rush when you start...

And you may want to consider getting "TeraCopy" http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

It is a free utility that copies much faster than native Windows, recovers from errors (without having to "start over") and will let you pause / restart copy or move operations.

No, that one is a "Pass-Thru" cable... The pin configuration is different...

It will say so on the package... Or the Geek Squad kid at BestBuy can point you to one...

The only time they are packaged with anything is transfer software, but that's rare... All the computers, routers, hubs, switches and modems are packaged with pass-thru cables...
