Wishfull Thinking (Don't read this one Cynic)

This makes too much sense, so it will never happen.

URINE TEST.............

Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work; they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit.

In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test .

Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check, because i have to pass one to earn it for them??

Please understand that I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting around doing drugs while I work.

Can you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?????

Pass this along if you agree or simply delete if you don't. Hope you all will pass it along, though.... something has to change in this country and soon!!!

I fully agree.

I also don't think its anyones business what people do at home on their off time. If people are showing up to work wasted... sure, fire them on the spot.

I also am a firm believer in cutting off public assistance after about 4 - 6 months if one can't find or get a job by that time.

If you can't afford kids, dont have them.

Sure, things happen like nasty divorces and arrests... and I agree in helping single mothers etc more so... but hey.. dont sit and get used to public assistance like other countries get used to our foreign aid.

The only comment I would make, HTR and Morgoth, is this; If you wish to help those less fortunate than yourself that is an admirable quality. However, it is not the responsibility of the government, IN ANY FORM, to do that for you. Once that door is opened it is very difficult to close.

Philanthropy, in the form of VOLUNTARY donations of time and money to help the downtrodden, is the way it should be done. People who make bad decisions should not be rewarded for their stupidity by having money taken from others simply given over to them. The housing market is a prime example.

Another note...

How many on welfare do you think have a bigscreen TV, computers, and go out to eat at least 4 times a week? Do they really need that Ford Excursion? I am sure its many.

Plus I don't like the idea of my tax dollars buying some undeserving half wit a bag of weed, when I can't even buy my own bag of weed Shocked

There's not enough room in this forum for me to list the examples I saw when my family owned three supermarkets in Richmond, VA. Then there are the examples my wife cites from the school she teaches at. Kids on government breakfast and lunch, free school supplies provided by the government (our taxes), after-school programs for the little darlings (aside from school related activities), etc.

And yet, these same kids are wearing the latest FuBu wear, Timberland shoes, $100 Nike's, $80 Guess jeans. Momma shows up for a conference with her nails just done and the latest in hair extensions. You can bet the parent(s) aren't giving up their beer and cigarettes so that they can pay for the kid's meals. I could go on, but you get the point.

Will the madness ever end?! Mad

In keeping with the spirit of this thread I thought you might enjoy reading my letter to the editor, from way back in 1997. I came in second place for Correspondent of the Year for this letter.

This letter was written on November 17, 1997 in response to the effort by some Virginia politicians to impress us with how sensitive they were to the plight of the downtrodden. They were going to attempt to live (buy food) on the amount of money that a welfare recipient received each month.

Dear Sir,

I just could not contain myself when I heard the news. Several Virginia law-makers will try to experience life on welfare in an attempt to “get closer to the people”. How trendy. How sensitive.

As a grocer who owns a store in a “low income” neighborhood please allow me to provide an example of the hardships faced by welfare recipients. I will not mention the studies that have been done showing how the average American child is overweight and that the majority of those are from “poor families”. One wonders how a person can become overweight on so little food.

Keep in mind that I speak from experience regarding my observations over the past twenty-plus years in the grocery business. I actually see what welfare recipients spend our money on. First let’s talk about how many of these poor people will spend a one-dollar food stamp on a piece of candy so that they can get change back in real cash. This is done several times over so that eventually you have enough real money to buy the beer or wine or cigarettes they really want.

Then there are those who sell the stamps for cash. $65 in stamps might sell for $40 in cash. This seems like a bargain to the purchaser until they are told by the store cashier that they cannot use the stamp without the book it was attached to. This leads one to wonder what happens to said stamp now that it cannot be used. Another waste of tax dollars?! We are told by our caring Government that the reason for welfare is so that the poorer among our citizens can buy the necessary food stuffs and other necessities of life, that they otherwise could not afford. I am left wondering why then do the recipients spend the stamps so carelessly?

Instead of healthful fruits and vegetables they buy chips and donuts. Instead of milk or juice it’s soft drinks and flavored waters. The list of unhealthy foods goes on and on. Were it their money and not my tax dollars I would have no qualms, but this is not the case. Thus we have W.I.C. vouchers. These vouchers specify only “healthy” foods for the benefit of Women, Infants, and Children. Why?! I thought welfare was supposed to take care of this. In the pages of this same editorial page some months back it was pointed out how a person on the government dole actually received benefits amounting to a salary of over $20,000 a year. Your tax dollars at work, folks!

If our thoughtful and caring politicians really wanted to see the abuses of our welfare system, and not just posture for the news media, let them come to work at my store during the first week of any month. Let them bring along their assistants to take notes of what is and is not purchased using our tax dollars. Let them see the real world where welfare recipients think that the world owes them something. Where these recipients think they have no obligation to shop wisely using our money. Let them stop trying to ply us with phony attempts at showing how much they care.

You forgot to mention how many of those welfare shoppers you get drive up in thier Lexus, Durango or Escapade... Meanwhile, those of me who have worked all their life get to drive 14 year old used trucks...
