That is what I was thinking. Very nice, but a 7mb header? That is a long time to wait for a header.

That's why animated .gifs have for the most part lost favor on websites. You can do exactly the same image in Flash, but instead of the server sending (in this case) 165,000 "pixels" PER FRAME to the client, it sends a few dozen "instructions" which are executed by the local Flash plugin on the client PC. It reduces the amount which must be transmitted by many orders of magnitude.
Flash can still be "overdone" on a website, and the best ones use it judiciously, but as long as flash is used as an integral part of the users experience of the website (animated menu systems, dynamic elements like charts or maps) and not just "gee whiz" which the user has to "put up with" to get to the content, animation can be a good thing.
I'm afraid animated .gifs are a thing of the 1990's though... (I'm trying to ignore the stupid baby eagle leaping in the air over and over and over as I type this. )
Just my two cents. I like your banner very much, but you might look at flash as a way to expand your technical prowess.

Here is a site with a nice example of using Flash as a header (complete with sound) that loads in a hot hearbeat. Simple but effective.
