Internet problems

I'm having trouble connecting to the internet through the wired LAN line. Right now I'm connected to the wireless network at school.

My laptop recognizes the school's network, but cannot connect to the internet. Nothing is wrong with the network when I diagnose it. I diagnosed the connection problem and it says it cannot contact the DNS server (can't remember the name, but it started with 192.something). It pings the server, but does not receive a response.

It worked well for the last 2 weeks, but started having this problem after returning from home. I've seen that IP address at home, and I think that's the IP of my home network. I've spent the last 3 hours trying to fix it, and it randomly fixed itself, but when I restarted my laptop, the problem came back.

Okay I restarted the network connection several times.

Tried again one last time and it worked. This might be just a one time fix, so if you guys have any other ideas of permanently fixing it, plz feel free to reply.

Well it definitely was a one time fix. I'm back to square one. Could not connect to the DNS server (192.168.0.1).

192.168.0.1 is your router... If you're not hooked up to it anymore, ie a direct connection to the modem, you will need to completely uninstall your internet connection (or install a second one like I did)... You will need the driver disk for the modem, and possibly get on the phone with your ISP, they can walk you through it rather quickly...

Currently I'm connected to the school's network. Is there a way where I can have both installed and use both whenever?

Depends on your version of windows, but it should be possible... Your schools IT department can walk you through it, but it basically means manually installing a second network connection in windows, and then selecting which one you want to use based on where you are...

I have 2 networks running here at my house... My wifes computer, both of my stepdaughter's computers and my daughter's computers are on 1, and all of my machines are on another... My primary PC can connect to either, and when I want to switch, I have to do it manually...

For some reason, anything before win98 wouldn't allow multiple networks (without a LOT of work that is)... Everything since win98 allow it, but they don't particularly like it, especially if the settings are different (most home networks don't use a gateway, most institutional networks do)...

Contact your school's IT group, they should be able to run you through the setup pretty quick...

You may have to type in the actual DNS server numbers instead of using the router to resolve them. Click on Start and then Run. In that command line type CMD and hit Enter. you should be at a "DOS" prompt. Now type ipconfig /all It will come back with a report. Look for DNS server line and right down the numbers. Plug those into your network setting numbers for your wired connection.
