Zombie tactics question ... |
|
|
OK, so I got COD5 and played for the first time last night and we made it to level 19 a lot and level 20 a few times.
We approached the game in two ways, both from the back room.
First we tried a few where we let them come down the stairs and then we tried a few where we kept the stairwell blocked and let them come through the door. Either way they keep coming and we die.
I was just thinking that there must be a reason for and endless supply of nades upstairs. Maybe everybody can keep chucking nades to slow those bastards down a little. Just a thought. Has anybody tried the upstairs when getting beyond level 18?

The best one I have found so far is one that most folks seem to use:
Stay in the front and just try to earn money / points for the first five rounds. Let some in so you can get more points for pooning them, rebuilding the boards, getting double points and insta-kills etc. You want to have at least 2-3,000 points when you head back so you have a couple of tries at the box and enough to get a thompson for the early going.
Head to the back at level six, everyone try the box. The two with the best weapons (heavy machine gun, ray gun, 50-cal sniper, or fg-32 are decent) guard the door taking turns reloading, and the other two do the wall and two windows.
Every so often we take turns during lulls to check the box and see if we can improve our weapons, switching who has door vs wall/windows duty as weapons change. The key especially at later levels is to be sure to have at least one heavy machine gun and one ray gun at the door.
Stay in the back and get into a rhythm / zone. Don't mess around running out and fixing windows in the front room between rounds or when there is an insta-kill, as the few extra points are not worth getting out of sync and having to regroup and get organized when they start again. Only run out when there is a power-up to get, with one guy going out and the other covering his back from the doorway.
We tried it both with clearing the staircase out front before we headed back, and not, and I think leaving it blocked works best. The advantage to clearing it is that more of the zombies go up some stairs outside and then down the inside stairs and through the door to the back room, which relieves a LOT of pressure on the wall and windows in the back. The disadvantage to this is that the two guys on wall/windows duty have trouble in rounds 6-11 or so making enough money to keep trying the box from time to time. It might be worth trying an approach where you clear the stairs at say level 16 or so, to focus the zombies on the door and allow you to put 2 1/2 people on the door and 1 1/2 on the wall / windows.
A lot of it comes down to the luck of the "magic box". If you hit a point in later levels (18+) where guys on the heavies and ray guns run out of ammo and the box is unlucky, you can get a broken rhythm where the two guys on the door don't have weapons good enough to hold them off, even a few seconds of this can be fatal. That is why it is important to take turns firing, with the secondary guy only handling the ones who get through or when the first guy is reloading. A lot of coordination on vent about who is checking the box when, who is getting low on ammo for that good weapon, and quickly changing roles when the gun situation changes is critical.
Unlike the way we play COD multiplayer, this really is a TEAM sport. Guys who: run off to do their own thing; or are knuckleheads who only want to watch the door no matter what weapon they have; or hog the box during every lull so that THEY get a good weapon no matter what happens to the rest of the team; they inevitably get the team killed somewhere around level 18-19 or so.

Eagle, you're describing EXACTLY what we did when we got to 19 and 20 last night.
One thing that really screws you up is when somebody goes to the right of the two who covers the door or when somebody goes to the right of the window that's left of the door. When they do that the one or two zombies that do get through turn left and right in stead of going straight for the two at the door. When one or two get through and manage to get to the two covering the door, it is just about over.
We've had some great team work last night and after round 17 one of us covering the windows relieved the doormen when reloading and they would let us know when they were about to reload. As soon as they have we went back to cover the wall and windows. When they ran out the one of us with the best weapons took over.
It worked well. It is definitely team work. For that reason I don't mind covering windows or the wall when I have a weaker weapon. What I do is I check windows and wall and always to see if one or two make it through and then I bail out the two at the door.
When it gets tough it helps to keep one zombie alive at the end of the round - keep him behind the wall, just keep rebuilding it. That way everybody can check the box over and over and over until they find a good weapon. That was a good find by Studdog.
I only got the game yesterday but I love the zombie thing already.

Also, while one is left alive, you can board up all the windows (extra points) and buy grenades.
Only time we had a challenge with one left was when it was a fast running one. He would keep us on your toes.
Like Bogey stated, it is really nice if you keep the last one behind the wall.
The challenge is good communication to make sure you don't kill the last one.
Then when everyone is happy with their weapon or out of money, kill the last one to end the round.

I agree also. Teamwork is a must.
Also another good tip is don't have CG guarding the stairs or the door.

I think the way to go is to have two guys with 50 cals at the door for as long as possible alternating fire. The first guy takes three shots before the second starts firing allowing the first to reload. This saves ammo on the heavies until needed. A third should cover their backs and the wall ONLY. This way he/she only has to turn and look to see if any slips through during the 50 cal reload. The fourth does both windows.
Give it a shot.

I found that while protecting the wall it is very easy to take a few shots at the door and far window without leaving the wall. So whoever is guarding the windows should make the side window thier priority, cause the wall person can also watch the far window until they can get to it. I liked using the 50cal sniper rifle to protect the far window since it was a one shot kill and has a scope. Just remember to not step more than two steps away from teh wall. That way you can rebuild and still get a few shots off in other places. I use a MG to kill those behind the wall. The wall is also a great place to keep the last zombie. When it gets close to the end just leave one there. If more than one shows up then kill all of them but one. You can only rebuild the wall as fast as one tears them down.
Heavy MG's work good at the door if you always aim for head shots. Try quick bursts instead of just letting it rip, and always aim down the sights at the heads.

You guys ready? For the Greatest Zombie strat EVER!
Ray Gun, Flame Thrower Combo
Ray Gun, MG 42 Combo
Ray Gun, Browning Combo
Ray Gun, MG 42 Combo
We spent the first 6 rounds in the main spawn room trying to build up as much money as possible. by round 6 we all had around 2000-2500. From there we opened up the top and the immediately opened up the stairs leading into the Random Box room
We made sure all the windows were fully patched before we went up and left the main floor for them to have. Now, we had to watch the 4 top floor windows and the stairs. And the 2 Bottom floor windows and the Hole in the wall. Most of us picked up the Pump shotgun located upstairs ( far better than the double Barrel). We had 1 person downstairs and the other 3 upstairs. There is a nade seller upstairs and we had the person constantly buying nades (only 250 for 4) and tossing them down the stairs while keeping people off the windows. The other person would be getting any people who made it up the stairs with a shotgun/Thompson combo. The 3rd person upstairs would be running back and forth between the 3 other windows. But basicaly only 2 since they seemed to not go to the 3rd window. Every once in a while people would go down and use the random box when they started to get a good build up of ca$h.
This worked well for a while but it became to much to hold the up top. so at round 11 we let it go. At this point we had been lucky and had 2 Ray guns. We set up the ray guns sitting at the bottom of the stairs. One person on primary fire and one person on secondary. Primary would fire at the people at the top of the stairs and if they missed one secondary would clean them up. The other person was watching the downstairs windows while the 4th person was watching the hole and helping out whereever needed.
By Round 18 we all had good weapon combos. We made sure the flame thrower was always watching the hole, since that is where the flame thrower is most affective. The flame thrower is useless at the stairs since it takes a long time for them to die. What makes it good for hole/windows is that you torch them and then put the wall back together + it cant run out of ammo so the person never needs to worry about reloads as long as they can manage the over heating. Another thing wrong with using it on the stairs is that it creates a smoke cloud and becomes very hard to see past it.
When the people at the bottom of the stairs began to run short of ray gun ammo the 2 people at the windows and hole would switch. so the bottom of the stairs people would use there secondary while the others would switch to there primary(the ray gun). Then when a max ammo box was finally dropped we would switch back to our normal positions where we all felt most comfortable.
Our downfall came when we couldn't get a max ammo box. Every single person ran out of ray gun ammo and the round just wouldnt end. We were able to kite them and revive eachother a few times, but we couldnt hold them off long enough and we finaly died.
Pros to this method vs only opening the random box door:
[*]the zombies are more spread out so the waves at times can be much ligher allowing you to focus on single areas.
[*]The Zombies cant sneak along the wall and pop in without being able to be shot from the main room
[*]As long as there is ammo available it is very difficult for any zombies to get in.
Cons to this method vs only opening the random box door
[*]In Early rounds there are much more places to cover. 8 vs 12
[*]Not really a con, but without getting lucky drops from the random box, its impossible
[*]Requires a great deal of team work, so if you arent playing with people you know, it could be very difficult
[*]No height advantage
