Does anyone know anything about Moutain Bikes and trail riding. I am interested in possibly purchasing a new bike.

You could check with Matt Baker. He was on the cover of a magazine riding a mountain bike.

I have a Gary Fisher Wahoo and love it. I have put roughly 800 street miles on it and about 500 - 600 off road. The original pedals do suck and last year I put about 100.00 into repairs. This year I have to change the rear gears as they are getting pretty worn.
I'm going to try to ride to my weekend job all summer which is 9 miles one way.

Well, I used to a fair amount a little while back, until it was STOLEN!!! I have road bike now because buying a new one just wasn't in the budget. (Now I'm just fine with the road, although I get the "itch" to do some trail riding.
You have to approach buying a bicycle much like a computer.
What's the purpose? (Road and/or trail)
And if trail riding how technical do you plan on getting?
-Fairly flat with little technical climbs?
-Hilly with a fair amount of technical climbs?
-A lot of switchbacks?
What's the budget?
Everybody is going to have their own opinion on what brand is good. Each brand will have its pros and cons. The most important part is getting the proper fit and position on the bike, and how it feels when doing the bulk of the type of riding you are going to do.
Bicycling Magazine really has some good articles and reviews.
http://www.bicycling.com
Here's the mountain bike section of it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all. I'd like to keep it around $500 or less...preferably less. I want to do some hardcore trails, but I will probably spend most of my time on the street.

To be honest, and obvious, Mountain bikes were not meant for long rides. You say 30 milers, that shouldn't be too bad, but I would suggest using different "street" tires for those longer rides, you'll definitely feel the difference.
If you plan on doing some "hard core" trails then a hard tale would be best, with an adjustable shock up front. This is so you can make it extra absorbent on the trails and not so much on the road.
Get in touch with a local bike shop with a good reputation and see what they have available (brand wise) You'll find your basic entry level bikes at that price cap, but should still have good quality. Trek, Gary Fisher, Cannondale, Specialized and some a few others are all good brands.
The components are the most important parts, so I would suggest if they are Shimano, (which I'm most familiar with) a minimum of LX (NVIDIA 7600's), XT (7900's), XTR (8800's)or about. The Alivio and Alero components are the entry level. (Like an NVIDIA 7300)
One thing I would definitely recommend if you're going to do "hard core" trails are "clipless" pedals. You can get some decent ones from Nashbar and Performance (online stores) for around $50 to $70. For the shoes you'll spend $80 and up. I used the low end price due to trying to stay in a budget. Oh and don't forget the helmet. Unless you already have one. And then of course there's the good'ol biking shorts, which are definitely a necessity.
Yes, just like computers, this can be quite an investment, but definitely one worth doing.
Like said, check out the local shop and see what they have and should be able to answer all of your questions.

Thanks for the info. I will visit a local shop and see what they have to offer. The miles would most likely be mostly urban riding. I want somethat I can get out on and work out on. This is going to be for adventure and fitness.
