Computer wont start up. Please help |
|
|
So here is the deal, sounds weird but please bear with me.......
I dropped a cordless phone next to my computer (sitting on hardwood floors) and the computer shut itself down. Thought maybe I hit the power strip on/off/reset button. So I unplugged the CPU and plugged it directly into the wall. I saw that the LED on the MB was on, so I thought I was good. Hit the power button and the fans turned a couple of times then everything went dead. I did a power on/off on the PSU and hit the power button again, same thing, fans spin a little then completely dead. Doing this process, the LED on the MB remains on, so I have to think it has power. Not sure what has happened. Is it possible the phone fried my MB???
The board is an EVGA 680i SLI ver A1
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ripley

It would seem weird that it happened that way but try this first.
1. reset the power supply connection on the motherborad. Actually unplug it then snap it back into place.
2. Next reset the memroy chips, normally it would give you beeps, but try it anyway.
3. Lastly, look at the capictors on the motherboard. They should have flat tops. If they are rounded on the top or have "stuff" oozing out, you need to replace the motherboard. (yes, stuff and oozing are technical terms).
Here is a picture of what the capictors look like...

Very much technical but not limited to computer work.

Reset the power cords, memory etc. Also removed all items powered except the MD and CPU fan. Still no dice. Next I removed the power supply and hook it up to one of my other computers and it started up.
So I have eliminated the PSU at the fault. I also checked the board over and no ooze coming from anything. So that leaves the CPU or the MB. My bet is the MB. Luckily the EVGA offers a lifetime replacement. I think I get stuck with a refurb board, but at least I don't have to shell out another $250 bucks.
Let the RMA process begin.
Thanks for the help

EVGA is standing by their board. They will issue a new board, not as I first thought a refurb board. The whole RMA process with take about a week or so. So no COD@ TDM for me
See you all in about 10 days.
