If you have recently upgraded your PC, by recently I mean in the last 3 or 4 months, or are considering an upgrade in the next couple of months, I would like to know what CPU you have built your system around. I have been an AMD guy for a long time, but I am not loyal to them. I more or less want gaming performance. I am the same way with video cards. Price will be a factor, but I don't really want to dip down into the budget world so much. I do, however, want to purchase a new video card and a couple of hard drives as well. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

CMOS

It depends on what your limit is, money wise.

I mean I would recommend for processor an Intel Quad Core E6750. For memory, no less than 2GB. For graphics card, no less than an 8800GTS, maybe even GTX.

I should be able to spend about $1200 to $1500.

No doubt it will be a 8800GTX or better

Hey cmos whats up bro? Im looking at upgrading myself, not that i need to, i just want to. Anyways, i also like AMD so if your going to take the leap take a look at the X2 6400 stay away from the quad core at this time. Each of the cores only have a 266 or a 333 front side bus, this causes alot of bottle necks. Video card, 8800 ultra. Stay away from the ati cards for the time being. If you want proof on the ati cards not performing as well check them out at www.guru3d.com. Ram, give the patriot ram a look. Its not the fastest, but it is very stable. You can OC it as well. Good luck and happy shopping. Very Happy

Hey bud! I just built an all new system as well.

As you know I've been an AMD guy for a while, but LOVE these new Dual Core Intel procs.

I got the E6750 and an 8800GTS with 640mb ram.

Get 4 Gigs of RAM and go Vista x64.

I built a 100% complete system with all of this and then some (Minus the monitor) for $1100.

If you want to see what I just built CMOS check my other thread just below this one, the main core parts only cost me 800, and this thing screams without overclocking a thing.

I actually looked at building an Intel machine more recently.. they seem to be leaping ahead a bit... but now that AMD is coming up short on the dough.. thats when they seem to get into gear and crank out some better stuff. I took a look at newegg and there really isn't much to choose from at the time. I think waiting a bit would be best if you plan on doing an entire new machine. Upgrade what you have with some used stuff or some other cheap way for a bit.

AMD's dual core 6000+ cpu is pretty cheap... and thats pretty much the high end for the time being. Im used to their high-end stuff being around $800, not $160.

The 8800 line will be half the price too as for video. I hear FPS is better in DX10 games with an ATI card, but that graphics are waaay better with an nvidia.

The new abit fatality sli board just looks plain sweet to me, i am a huge fan of abit mobos... asus is overrated in my book, and just too costly for what you get.

$85 will get you a 320GB sata 3.0/GBs seagate harddrive... bought one about 2 yrs ago or so and love it.. might grab another.

Hmmm, I have been an Asus fan for a while. I may look at the Abits. I know they have a good reputation. Thanks for the all info. Right now I think I am leaning towards an Intel Dual core, minimum 2 Gbs of Memory, some type of LGA775 Mobo Asus/Abit, Vista home premium 64 Bit, I may wait a bit on the video card. My 7800 still performs decently and I can save for a Phatty card.

I would recommend 3 Gbs dual channel corsair xms. do a 2x 1gb in 1 & 3, and 2x 512mb in 2 & 4. UT3 will utilize it well Wink I might go a cheaper route and give gskill memory a shot. I never overclock the stuff anyway.

I myself am not too concerned about DX10 yet, so I will still use my 6800GT for awhile. Just waiting on nvidia to get their act together and produce a decent driver. Im getting the random lag and freezes every 5 min. or so... I know its the driver. At least I think I do. Mostly does it in HL2 episode 2. Did a little in Bioshock. Im only running 1 gig of ram too though.

The cool thing about the higher end abit boards is the sound it comes with... i almost have no use for my 7.1 creative card... the guru chips and utilities are awsome.. ram fans, and rear fans on the boards are nice.

I run the AN8 Fatality board now and just love it. I wish they would still make a good single videocard board though since im still not a huge fan of SLI... but I think I have no choice for my second build.

MSI makes a killer videocard.. and they usually clock higher, and run cooler than the rest. I am still using my first MSI card now, and love it.
