The population of this country is 300 million.
160 million are retired.
That leaves 140 million to do the work.
There are 85 million in school.
Which leaves 55 million to do the work.
Of this there are 35 million employed by the federal government.
Leaving 15 million to do the work.
2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden.
Which leaves 12.2 million to do the work.
Take from that total the 10.8 million people who work for state and city
governments.
And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals.
Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to do the work.

You and me.

And there you are, sitting on your butt, at your computer, reading jokes.

shite. I put in 110 hours the past 2 weeks. Thanksgiving is next week and I'm doing a double shift.

what I don't get is that with two college educated medical professionals under one roof, how come we can still only afford the cheaper housing?

We both make $26 an hour and do overtime frequently, yet we're still struggling. while not living paycheck to paycheck, we don't have anything as far as investments. right now my retirement portfolio consists of (losing) powerball tickets. Rolling Eyes

It's called "Progressive Income Tax." Check out the planks of the communist manifesto and you'll find it listed there. The more you earn, the more the government takes from you. But don't worry, the government knows how to use your money better than you do. Rolling Eyes Shocked

On a more serious note.....I make an average of $200 to sometimes over $350 a day (when weather permits). I'm a one man operation and my wife does not work. I have some small investments and an IRA that I started very late in this thing called life. We have 3 kids and 2 pets, 1 paid vehicle and a new vehicle and because money slips through my hands like a greased ice cube we always struggled.

That is until I listened to my wife. Had to stop eating lunch everyday and take it. Stop renting so many movies, stop buying so many darn "new" products for detailing, rework my cell phone bill so my incoming calls are FREE, get rid of credit cards and make sure I pay all things on TIME (that's a huge savings right there) stop frivolous spending altogether......basically stop living above our means. So now while it sucks not being able to spend money (which was usually on stupid stuff anyways) it's nice to be able to pay the bills we do have on time and not worry about it.

So for those struggling.....look at where the money is going and plug the leaks. I now pay cash for everything so if I ain't got the cash, I ain't got the item either Smile

One of the best ways to create forced savings is to either elect direct deposit at work and try to take advantage of any matching dollars in Company 401k's which essentially is free money, or to have automatic withdrawals from your checking account into your IRA. The idea is to save first each month and spend what's left.

It would be excellent to match your savings and return assumption to the targeted amount you will need for retirement that way you take advantage of the eighth wonder of the world, compound interest. Very Happy Using the law of 72nd's where you divide 72 by your interest rate, you find that money will double every 6 yrs if you average 12% interest. (72/12=6) Therefore if you have saved $100,000 and you were able to net 12%, $100K becomes $200K in 6 years, and then $400K, $800K, $1.6M and so on.... (Also note..earning 5% means your money won't double until 14 years. 72/5=14.4 Confused )

Every big mountain has to start somewhere and as you mentioned, the earlier you start, the easier it will be.

Very good advise Dellis. I am a state employee and I get paid one time a the end of the month. We pay all our bills at the first of the month and what we have left is what we live on. My wife gets paid every other week and that goes to groceries, gas, etc. I am still paying on a debt from a failed business. I bought the computer store from the family of my boss that passed away. They didn't know much about the business since it was a sudden death. I didn't check into everything and ended owing the IRS almost 20k. Evil or Very Mad Life goes on...
