KillJoy here's some pictures of the dam you were asking about.
Norway and Oakdale Dams.
Some areas got over six inches of rain in one night.
It didn't help that the ground was still frozen and water couldn't be absorbed.
You were correct, the water was going over the dam for a while.
There was a lot of concern about this, but it survived.
These pictures were taken a few days after the storm came thru.
Apparently this is what a dam looks like when there's a little bit of water behind it.

I think the second picture is the Oakdale Inn
("Best catfish by a dam site," according to their sign)
Normally it's pretty far above the level of the river below the dam, but right now, the parking lot is under water.

For those of you not familiar with these dams, the river is usually about the width of the spillway coming out of the dam and the lakes are normally far below the top of the dams.

Dam! Of course it could be worse, lasherman, they could build a city in a bowl that is below sea level. But, who would be dumb enough to do that?! Shocked Rolling Eyes

Look at picture five, the water was hitting the top of the bridge.
That bridge use to be really high.
The river use to be in a valley.
Most of the houses were not in a flood zone.
The were considered beyond any known flood zone.
Unfortunately when it rained the ground was still frozen and there was a tremendous amount of water shed.
We don't get a lot of rain storms in Indiana in January.
Most of the people did not have flood insurance because it wasn't needed.
If I had some before pictures, you would see why.
Normally when it floods, the water doesn't jump the banks near the dam.
I'm down stream from the dams by several miles.
Where I'm at the banks aren't very high and it's normal to see huge fields under water during floods.

I was born in the area below sea level (approx. 7 - 8 feet). About 10 years ago I moved south. My village is about 30 ft. above sea level.
With this global warming, I should be living on the North Sea coast in about 20 years! Twisted Evil
